The Gentle King Who Won’t Break You
(Inspired by Matthew 12:15–21)
Have you ever felt like a bruised reed — cracked, bent, one more push from snapping? Or like a smoking flax, more smoke than flame, barely hanging on?
In a world that celebrates the strong and discards the fragile, Jesus does the opposite. Matthew tells us that Jesus withdrew from those plotting His death, healed the multitudes, and then Matthew quoted Isaiah, concerning Jesus: “A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench.”
This is not weakness. This is power under perfect control. The same Servant who could command legions of angels chooses instead to bind up the broken and fan the faintest spark back into flame. Greatness, as heaven defines it, does not crush what is already struggling.
So come to Him today — just as you are. Not when your faith feels stronger, not when you’ve cleaned yourself up. The Greater One is not looking for an excuse to finish you off. He is nursing that flame.
If Jesus handles bruised people this carefully, how then might we who have experienced His care in this way, treat the fragile ones God places in our path?
