What Falls Out When Jesus Shakes the Tree
Matthew 12:31–37
Jesus says something here that unsettles people: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. If that verse has ever kept you up at night wondering if you’ve crossed some invisible line, take a breath — a troubled conscience is proof you haven’t. What Jesus describes is settled, comfortable hostility, and a blatant rejection of the Holy Spirit’s ministry (John 16:5-11).
But don’t let that let you off the hook entirely, because Jesus isn’t finished. He gives us a simple, uncomfortable diagnostic: “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” You don’t need to see someone’s roots to know what tree they are. Just listen to what falls out of their mouth when they’re discussing Jesus.
For us who name the name of Christ as His followers, that’s not ancient history — that’s Tuesday. That’s the comment about your spouse when you’re irritated. The joke at a coworker’s expense. The way you talk about your kids when you think no one who matters is listening. Our words are a reflection of our hearts.
Here’s the good news hiding in this hard passage: if Jesus loves us enough to expose what’s really in there, He loves us enough to change it. The goal was never to catch you — it’s to heal you.
So don’t defend the fruit. Ask the Gardener to deal with the root. What came out of your mouth today, and what does it tell you about what’s growing underneath?
