He Already Gave You the Only Sign That Matters

Matthew 12:38–45

By this point in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus had cleansed lepers, calmed storms, raised the dead, and — sixteen verses earlier — completely restored a blind, mute, demon-possessed man. And still they said, “Teacher, we want a sign.”

That wasn’t an honest question. It was a stall tactic wearing the costume of curiosity. So Jesus gave them one final sign — the only one that would ultimately matter: three days in the earth, then risen. He wasn’t speaking in riddles. He was predicting His own resurrection.

Then He held up Nineveh and the Queen of Sheba as witnesses against His own generation. Nineveh repented at the preaching of a reluctant prophet. A foreign queen crossed a continent on nothing but a rumour about a human king’s wisdom. Both had less evidence than the men standing in front of Jesus and both produced more faith.

Maybe you’ve had a lifetime of evidence too: answered prayers, a Bible on your shelf, a church that’s loved you, a testimony you could tell if someone asked. If more proof, one more miracle, one more sign isn’t what’s actually going to move your heart — then hear this plainly: it never was going to be enough. The sign has already been given. He is risen. What are you still waiting for?
