Israel: A Stirring for the Messiah “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace!” — Luke 19:42Just this past Friday, thousands of Jewish people gathered at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, praying the Selichot prayers—asking God for mercy and forgiveness. They also prayed the Amidah, crying out in unity for the speedy arrival of Mashiach—the Messiah. What a remarkable and prophetic sight! Israel is praying for the Messiah, yet the Messiah has already come. Two thousand years ago, Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. He fulfilled the Scriptures concerning His coming, yet Israel did not recognise Him. Jesus looked upon Jerusalem and declared that they had missed “the things that make for your peace.” But Israel’s story is not finished. Zechariah 12:10 tells us that a day is coming when God will pour out upon Israel “the Spirit of grace and supplication”, and they will “look on Me whom they pierced.” The One they rejected will one day be recognised as their Messiah. This is why we should take notice of what is happening in Israel. We cannot say that every current event is a direct fulfilment of prophecy, but we should not ignore the stirring taking place among God’s chosen people. Israel is once again crying out to God and looking for Messiah. Scripture tells us that a final seven-year period of Tribulation is coming, culminating in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, when Israel will finally recognise her Messiah. The question for us is simple:
While Israel is looking for Messiah, are we looking for His return? Jesus said, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42 The hour is late. The prophetic stage is being prepared. Israel is stirring. The Messiah has come. And the Messiah is coming again. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” — Revelation 22:20
Nepal… 2 Corinthians 1:4 “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”As we hear reports of the devastation taking place in Nepal, it is difficult to comprehend the suffering that so many people are experiencing. Homes destroyed, families grieving, communities devastated and lives suddenly turned upside down. From the comfort and security of our own homes, it can be easy to watch such scenes on a screen and then simply move on with our day. But as Christians, we are called to something more. Paul reminds us that God is “the God of all comfort.” Notice that he doesn’t say God comforts us only when everything is going well. He comforts us “in all our tribulation.” The Lord meets us in the valleys, in the disasters, in the grief and in the moments when we simply don’t understand why these things have happened.
Yet there is another important truth in this verse. God comforts us so that we might comfort others.
The comfort we have received from God is never intended to stop with us. Having experienced His faithfulness in our own times of trouble, we are better equipped to come alongside others who are hurting. Sometimes that comfort is practical—giving, serving, providing food or shelter. Sometimes it is simply sitting with someone who is grieving. And sometimes it is praying when there are no words adequate enough to describe the pain.
We may be thousands of kilometres from Nepal, but distance does not prevent us from caring. We can pray for those who have lost loved ones, for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, for emergency workers and those bringing aid, and especially for opportunities for the Gospel to go forth in the midst of such devastation. There is something powerful about the people of God responding to suffering—not merely with sympathy, but with compassion. Today, let’s not simply watch the devastation in Nepal and feel helpless, let us Pray!
Helen’s heart – calvary women
After all the washing, cleaning, grocery shopping, changing of diapers, raising and instilling values to our children – it is good at the end of the day to peek into the children’s rooms and see the calm and peace as they sleep. A job well done! What a priceless gift we give our family in mothering. Prov 31:27 She watches over the ways of her household…. Love – changes diapers, cleans up mess and ties shoes over and over again. Love – doesn’t try to impress others with her knowledge as a mother. Love – doesn’t lose her temper easily and scream at the kids. Love is genuinely happy when others are happy. Love is honoured by her children and love doesn’t feel cheated by being a mother.
