Our Life and Our Future
Another Monday morning. As I reflect on Sunday’s study in Exodus and the Gospel of Matthew, I find myself asking, “Lord, what are You trying to get my attention about?”
Once again, I am reminded of the gracious, forgiving and merciful character of our God. He desires that we know Him—not merely know about Him, but come to know Him in a deeper and greater way. Every time we read the Bible, every time we hear God’s Word taught, He is drawing us closer to Himself and giving us a greater understanding of His power, His might and His love.
Every word of Scripture ultimately points us to Jesus Christ and the wonder of His death and resurrection, and what His finished work means for everyone who will receive Him as Lord and Saviour.
Yet as we go about the ordinary, mundane things of life—working, shopping, paying bills, raising families and dealing with all the responsibilities that come with living in this world—we can easily forget that this world is not our final destination.
James reminds us just how brief our earthly life really is:
“For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
— James 4:14
A vapour appears for a moment and then disappears. That is the picture James gives us of our life here on earth when compared with eternity.
So perhaps today is the right moment to lift our eyes above ourselves, above our circumstances and above this present world, and take a step back to consider the bigger picture.
Where am I heading?
What is the purpose of my time here?
What awaits me when my life in this world comes to an end?
These are not merely philosophical questions. They are the most important questions we will ever face.
And Jesus Christ alone has the answer.
Jesus said:
“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
— Matthew 16:26
We can spend our lives pursuing possessions, success, comfort, recognition and everything this world has to offer, but none of these things can secure our eternity.
Our life here is temporary, but our future is eternal.
So this Monday morning, look beyond today. Look beyond this world. Look to Jesus.
Make sure your life is right with Him. Know Him. Walk with Him. Live for Him. And remember that the greatest thing you can possess in this life is the assurance that, through faith in Jesus Christ, your future is secure in eternity with Him.
