Daily devotion – Help God I am struggling!
God Helps Us
We are indeed unique creations of God! We have the capacity to experience deep emotions that stir within us. At times, something can delight us so deeply that we celebrate with great joy and excitement. Yet at other times, we can plummet to depths of despair.
Even the great Apostle Paul knew something of these struggles when he wrote:
2 Corinthians 4:7–9:
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”
We can experience seasons of wonder and joy, but also seasons of barrenness and deep trouble. There is something within humanity that makes us unique in God’s creation. God has created us with a spirit, and within us our thoughts, emotions, fears, hopes, and struggles can stir deeply.
That is why it is so foolish when man attempts to solve the deepest problems of the human heart through philosophies and methodologies which, try as they may, cannot bring the true peace and rest we so desperately need when everything within us seems to be crashing.
But God, in His wonderful grace, has not left us without hope.
When Jesus ascended to take His place at the right hand of the Father, He promised us a Helper:
John 14:16–18:
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth… I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
So what do we do when we are deeply troubled within?
We cry out to God with all our being and ask Him to help us. We ask Him to take hold of our thoughts, to calm our hearts, and to help us take our minds from those things that are causing us grief and distress.
And as we bring these things to Him, the Holy Spirit helps us to mature and grow. He enables us to begin seeing the things that trouble us as God sees them.
Then we thank Him for His help, His presence, and His faithfulness—and we live another day for His glory and praise!
God has not left us alone. We have a Helper who abides with us forever.
