Stay Awake: The Enemy Works While We Sleep
Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43
Jesus’ parable of the wheat and the tares contains a sobering warning: while the servants slept, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat.
Jesus explains that the field is the world, the good seed represents the sons of the kingdom, and the enemy is the devil. The striking thing is that the weeds initially looked almost identical to the wheat. They could not easily be distinguished until the harvest.
The warning for us is clear. Satan does not always attack through obvious opposition. Sometimes deception looks remarkably like truth. False teaching can sound Christian. Counterfeit spirituality can look convincing. Even religious activity can exist without genuine spiritual life.
That is why Scripture repeatedly calls believers to be awake and discerning.
Peter tells us to be sober and vigilant because our adversary is actively seeking whom he may devour. We don’t need to become suspicious of everyone, but we do need to know God’s Word well enough to recognise what contradicts it.
So ask yourself today: Am I spiritually awake?
Don’t simply be impressed by personality, confidence, popularity, or charisma. Test what you hear against Scripture.
Know the truth. Hold fast to the truth. And stay awake.
