Daily devotion – When disappointments come.
Facing Disappointments
Philippians 3:10
“That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.”
Disappointments in life come to all of us. A relationship does not work out. A job application falls short. A promotion passes us by. We fail an exam. A door we hoped would open remains closed. The list goes on.
It matters not our age, our wealth, our ability, or even our capacity to excel—disappointments still come.
At times, it can be difficult to find our way through life when the wheels seem to fall off. We can withdraw into ourselves, become angry, lose heart, or simply want to quit.
But praise God—Jesus Christ never disappoints!
His character and His love for us mean that His promises can be trusted. His presence is always with us. His comfort is always available. And when others may have given up on us, He never does.
There are times when we feel like resigning, especially when disappointment seems to have become a constant companion. Yet it is in those very moments that God’s grace and the peace that passes all understanding can rise from the ashes of defeat.
God speaks to our hearts: Don’t give up. Keep trusting. Keep praying. Keep seeking Me.
So what do we do with our heartbreaking failures, our disappointments, and the things we simply cannot change?
We lay them at the feet of Jesus.
Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:6–7:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Notice those words: “with thanksgiving.”
Even in disappointment, we have so much for which to give thanks. Our circumstances may change, people may disappoint us, plans may fail, and doors may close—but God remains faithful.
I love how the Psalms continually call us to lift our gaze above our circumstances and look to the Lord:
Psalm 3:3
“But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.”
What a beautiful picture of our God. When disappointment causes our head to hang down, He lifts it up. When we feel defeated, He reminds us that our hope is not found in circumstances but in Him.
We may not understand every disappointment. We may not see why God allowed a particular door to close. But we can trust the One who sees what we cannot see.
Jesus has never failed us, and He never will.
So today, whatever disappointment you may be carrying, don’t carry it alone. Bring it to Christ. Pray over it. Give thanks in the midst of it. Lift your eyes to Him and allow Him to lift your head.
This is how we live for the glory of God each day—trusting Him, even when life doesn’t turn out the way we expected.
