Helen’s Heart
“The Lord has comforted His people and will have compassion on His suffering ones.” – Isaiah 49:13. When troubles overwhelm us, it is hard for us to see a way out and how this problem will work out. After the bleak winter rains and storms the spring and sunshine bring a carpet of colourful wildflowers. Our burdens are like winter storms preparing a way for something beautiful in our lives. “For lo winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth the time of singing has come.” – Song of Solomon 2:11.

Grace Giving 2Co 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. We encourage all of you who are part of our Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour Fellowship family to give without obligation but with a cheerful heart of worship. Your gifts allow God’s work to be done in “Judea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the world.” Account name – Calvary Chapel Church Secret Harbour Incorporated – Account – 10891970 – BSB – 066-516.

From the Pastor’s desk –
John 2:24–25 “But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.”
More and more, I am seeing pastors and churches using increasingly outlandish means and methods to attract attention. A pastor driving a brand-new Rolls-Royce onto the platform and stepping out to preach is just one recent example. In many places, the church has become more like a circus act, a vaudeville show, or a form of entertainment. The thinking seems to be: Anything that draws a crowd must be worthwhile. But is it the fault of the pastor who provides such demonstrations, or the fault of those who are drawn to them? Obviously, there is responsibility on both sides. I am fascinated by the fact that the greatest Teacher and Preacher who ever walked this planet, Jesus Christ Himself, did not continually use spectacular demonstrations to attract larger crowds. There was one very public and extraordinary exception—His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. But Jesus did this in fulfilment of Scripture and prophecy. He wasn’t putting on a show to build His ministry. He was fulfilling the Father’s Word. Whilst on numerous occasions, Jesus actually withdrew from the crowds. He was not obsessed with numbers, popularity or keeping the crowds entertained. His concern was for those who truly believed that He was the Son of God and that through Him salvation could be found. Jesus knew the hearts of people. John 2:24–25 reminds us that He did not entrust Himself to people simply because they were impressed by Him or followed the crowd. He knew what was in their hearts. Pastor Chuck Smith used to warn Calvary Chapel pastors with a very practical observation: “If you put on a show in your church this Sunday, you had better put on a bigger and more exciting show next Sunday to keep that same crowd coming!” That is the danger of making entertainment the attraction. You have to keep increasing the spectacle. What amazed people yesterday may no longer impress them tomorrow. But the Word of God does not need to become more spectacular.
The Gospel does not need gimmicks. Jesus Christ does not need to be made more attractive. Christ is enough.
So what are you looking for when you come to church?
Are you looking for a show?
Are you looking to be entertained?
Are you looking for a rush of excitement and extravaganza?
Or are you hungry for the faithful teaching of God’s precious Word? There is a great difference between being entertained by the church and being transformed by the Word of God. Paul said: 1 Corinthians 2:2 “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” The question for all of us is simple: Is Jesus Christ enough—or does a “Las Vegas Jesus” have greater appeal? May we never become so fascinated with the spectacular that we lose our hunger for the simple, powerful, life-changing truth of God’s Word.
