Jesus Notices What Others Miss
Scripture: Matthew 15:32
“I have compassion on the multitude.”
Those words are easy to read quickly. But pause for a moment and consider who said them. Jesus had spent three days with a crowd in a remote place. Their food had run out, and they faced a difficult journey home. The people weren’t making demands or complaining. They were simply hungry.
Yet Jesus noticed.
The remarkable thing is that Jesus raised the issue before anyone else did. His disciples seemed not to have recognised the problem, but Jesus saw it clearly. He cared not only about their spiritual needs but also about their physical well-being. He was concerned that they might faint on the way home.
What a Saviour! His compassion is not a vague sentiment or a polite expression of sympathy. It moves Him to act.
And there’s a challenge here for those of us who follow Him.
It’s possible to be so comfortable in our Christian circles that we stop noticing people beyond them. We know our friends, our routines, and our responsibilities. Meanwhile, the lonely neighbour, the struggling parent, the newcomer, or the person everyone else avoids can remain almost invisible.
Jesus calls us beyond our comfortable boundaries.
Perhaps the first step isn’t a grand act of service. Perhaps it’s a conversation. A sincere question. A willingness to listen instead of rushing away. Sometimes the most Christlike thing we can do is notice someone whom everyone else has overlooked.
Ask God to give you the eyes of Jesus today. Who is standing on the margins of your world? Who might be carrying a burden you haven’t seen?
Reflect: Who around you needs to know that someone sees them and cares?
Pray: Lord, give me Your compassion. Open my eyes to the people I usually overlook, and give me the courage to move towards them with genuine love. Amen.
