Daily devotion – Just what the doctor ordered!

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” — Psalm 1:2

One of the greatest struggles for Bible teachers and preachers is not finding something to teach from God’s Word. No, the real struggle is deciding what to leave out! As we study the Scriptures, we discover such an endless wealth of truth, wisdom and wonder that we can easily try to bite off more than we can chew in the limited time we have to share God’s Word.

As we study book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse, we discover that the riches of God’s Word are truly bottomless!

But this is not just for pastors and teachers. Every Christian needs to be growing in God’s Word. Whether you are a father, mother, husband or wife, as you lead your family in devotion and worship, you need the Lord’s wisdom to know what to share, when to share it, and how to minister to the particular needs and struggles of those you love.

The more time we spend in God’s Word and in prayer, the greater the storehouse of Scripture the Holy Spirit can draw upon in our lives.

Jesus promised His disciples:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” — John 14:26

What a wonderful promise! As we faithfully read, study and learn God’s Word, the Holy Spirit can bring the right Scripture to our remembrance at the right moment. A verse may be exactly what your wife, husband, son or daughter needs to hear in a time of difficulty—or what you desperately need yourself!

We do not read the Bible merely to memorise words or accumulate knowledge. We read it to know our Lord, to hear His voice through His inspired Word, and to allow His truth to take root in our hearts. When the soil of our hearts is receptive, His Word grows within us, producing spiritual fruit in our lives.

I love Psalm 1 because it gives us such a beautiful picture of the believer who delights in God’s Word and continually draws nourishment from Him.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” — Psalm 1:2–3

What a picture of a life rooted in God! Like a tree planted beside life-giving waters, we draw continually from the riches of His Word. We are strengthened, nourished and equipped to bear fruit in His appointed season.

Dear friend, never underestimate the value of time spent alone with the Lord and His Word. You may not realise it at the time, but the Scripture you read today may be the very truth the Holy Spirit brings to your remembrance tomorrow when someone needs encouragement, direction, correction or hope.

Keep filling your heart with God’s Word. Meditate upon it, pray over it, live it out and share it with others.

Enjoy the wonder of God’s Word, grow deeply in His truth, and experience the joy of sharing its life-giving riches with those God brings across your path!
