Goliaths in your life….!
In 1 Samuel chapter 17 we have the story of David and Goliath. Most of us know this story, that is of the young shepherd boy sent by his father Jesse to take food and supplies to David’s brothers who were with the army of Israel doing battle with the Philistines. Goliath was the giant champion soldier of the Philistines and he had the whole army of Israel fearful….along comes David and you know the rest from there. This little shepherd boy David ends up fighting Goliath and killing him bringing victory to Israel. A couple of important points to consider in this famous victory that launched David into history!
David did not go looking for Giants to knock over!
But God sent David to kill Goliath!
God did not send David to Goliath to make a treaty.
God did not send David to Goliath to come to some compromise.
God did not send David to Goliath to frighten David
God sent David to Goliath to kill him, to take him out.
God has our lives run into Goliaths and they are made for only one reason – to defeat!
What fears, giants, Goliaths do you have standing in front of your path?
Is it a fear of trusting God?
Is it a fear that if you do that He will let you down?
Is it a fear of losing things you consider safe, in your control?
Let me ask you a question today, what actually do you have in your control?
What, no matter what happens in the world, will you ensure cannot be stolen, broken, damaged, or wear out?
James 4:13-14
Look here, you people who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog–it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
God sent David to the valley of Elah for David to take on and kill Goliath, not to feed his brothers cheese!
What valley is God sending you or has He sent you?
How did David defeat Goliath and how was he not fearful like all the others?
1. David fought Goliath by coming against him in the name of the Lord – v45 In other words David let God fight the battle His way through him.
2. David had (as a simple shepherd boy looking after his father’s flock) already been in battles, killing a lion, and a bear – he already had accepted God’s challenges for him to grow, to do battle and he had tasted God’s victory in his obeying Him. v34-35
3. David ran to meet Goliath – he had an absolute Godly perspective of who was going to win and who Goliath really was going to be in battle with – God Almighty! v51.
4. David finished off Goliath with Goliath’s own sword – see verse 51. David dealt swiftly and seriously with that which was confronting him.
Follow David’s battle plan for your Goliaths – Go to battle in God’s name, remember the victories that God has already brought you through, face them head on and finally, have no compromise with the Goliaths you fear – finish them off for ever!
