Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven – Matthew 6:20
Two old friends were dying, one was wealthy and the other poor. The wealthy man did not know Christ, but the poor man was a strong believer. The wealthy man spoke to his friends and said, “When I die, I shall have to leave all my wealth. But when my not so wealthy friend dies, he will go to his riches.”
In just one short sentence, the wealthy man summed up the contrast between them both. The man worth everything, in reality, had nothing; the man with nothing, in reality, had everything.
These two men are a vivid illustration of what Jesus taught to His disciples: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…but lay up your treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21.
Does that mean we must renounce all our material possessions? No, not unless God clearly commands us to do so.
But it does mean we commit everything we have – including our lives – to our Lord Jesus Christ and put His will above everything else!
