Daily devotion – The Backslider

Pro 14:14 The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above

The term ‘backslider’ is not used often used in today’s vocabulary. But the sad reality of it is very much with us today. It’s when seemingly sincere Christian begins to ‘slide backward’ in their faith and move away from God. They return to their old lifestyle, their old ways and habits acting as if Jesus no longer means anything to them.

Why does someone backslide? Sometimes it is because their faith in the first place was not real. They never really had committed their lives to Jesus Christ and been born again in the first place.

1Jo 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

But sometimes there is a dryness, or a seeming backslide for a believer too. When this occurs, Satan rejoices. The good news is that God loves even the backslider and stands ready to forgive.

We all need to guard against backsliding in our faith in our precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The other good news is that every genuine believer will always return to Christ and repent of their sins and begin again a blessed relationship with Him.

Zec 1:3 “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the LORD of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts.
