Daily devotion – A quiet place in His presence

Pastor Keith   -

Mat 6:6 “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

There is just something about being alone with God, spending time with Him and being in His presence. Sadly today, very few people actually do this!

It seems with every new day, from somewhere comes a distraction, a job to be done that was not there previously, a form that needs to be filled in or you cannot…(fill in in the blank), and each of these things must be done now, today!

You thought you had fixed everything that was broken, paid all that needed paying, but a new day arrives and just like Tom Hanks famously said in the movie Apollo 13, “Houston we have a problem.” It is at such a time we can go either one of two ways, get upset or give up!

But the Bible has another door for us to go to. It’s to step into the throne room of God by prayer and sit in His presence.

Actually, God desires that we do this every day – to be with Him, to be at His feet, to be comforted and assured by His presence. To know within us that He has us covered. He knows what we are going through and He will get us through it!

In my office at Church, on the wall hangs my favourite Scripture. It speaks of a time in the Old Testament when Moses would meet with God in what was called “The Tent of Meeting”. The forerunner of the Temple to come.

This day along with Moses went his army general named Joshua.

Exodus 33:11 So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. (NKJV)

Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting. (NLT)

Things were always hectic for Moses and Joshua as they led this massive number of people out of Egypt and into the desert eventually to the Promised Land.

Moses left the tent, but Joshua stayed! I can only presume but as I examine that text I picture Joshua absolutely comfortable and secure just sitting there in God’s presence. No idle talk, no requests being made, just the glorious presence of God washing over him and granting him strength, courage, peace and calm to face another new day.

Spend some time with God. Make your relationship with Him real. Be in His presence, enjoy sitting at His feet and He will refresh you each day!
