Daily devotion – unthankful
New Year’s Resolutions – 2022
There are two reasons why it can be a good thing to make resolutions at the beginning of a New Year. First, it forces us to examine our own hearts and motives – to be honest about our own shortcoming, our failures and our selfishness with a need to change!
Thus self-examination – with prayer and the study of God’s Word, helps us to see where we are falling short and Lord willing, exhorts us to repent and seek God’s help for change.
Secondly, actually writing down or journaling such resolutions can bring us closer to God. If we are honest, we know we fall far short of being what we ought to be – and because of that, we need God’s forgiveness.
We will all realize that we can’t live the way we should in our own strength – we need God’s help!
One final note, Paul said that a sign of us living in the Last Days are that the days would be – ‘perilous’ times, with one of the signs being that of …unthankful!
As a follower of Christ, to be a person who is unthankful is an affront to all that is godly.
We see this thanklessness in the world daily, as people show little regard to faithfulness, loyalty, respect, accountability and plain good manners.
People treat marriage, parenting, relationships and sadly Christ’s Church with total self-interest so they leave the marriage on a whim, they disrespect their parents with total disregard and associate with Christ’s Church with purely a consumer mentality.
Yet our Lord remains faithful and He revealed to us His very own example of how we should live by washing the feet of His disciples on the night of His betrayal – even though He was the Son of God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, about to be crucified.
Let us not be self-indulgent in 2022, but instead let us be gracious, respectful, selfless and thoughtful of others. In particular, let us love the body of Christ, of which Jesus is the Head, with a passion and a joy that pleases He who created it.
Give careful thought to your ways – Haggai 1:5
