Daily devotion – Good deeds…
It is foolishness to think that our good deeds may one day outweigh our bad deeds and allow us entry to Heaven. For two reasons!
First, it’s just not true – Even our good deeds are defective, because we do not honour God in the way we do them. The Bible tells us – “Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” – Romans 14:23. Paul goes onto say in the same letter that when people will stand before God as their judge – they will have nothing to say – “Whatever the law says it speaks….so that every mouth may be stopped.” – Romans 3:19. We will say nothing and it is folly to think our good deeds will outweigh our bad deeds before God.
Secondly, it is folly to think that your good deeds will get you right before God because this is not the way God saves. If we are saved from the consequences of our bad deeds. It will be because the “record of (our) debt” in Heaven has been nailed to the Cross of Christ. There is no hope in deeds!
There is only hope in the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
There is no salvation by balancing our records. There is only salvation by the cancelling of our records. The record of our bad deeds was “nailed to the Cross” – Colossians 2:13.
Just how was our record nailed to the Cross you ask? There was no parchment pinned to the Cross, Jesus was! Jesus Christ became my damning record of bad (and good) deeds. He alone endured my damnation in my place. He put salvation on a totally different level.
He is my only hope. And my faith in Him is my only way to God.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
