Daily devotion – a Roman Centurion
Mar 15:39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
I love this story of the Roman Centurion at Calvary. Could he have been the officer in charge of Christ’s crucifixion? Possibly. For sure, he was a Roman and not a believer.
But something made his heart change. Something that he saw impacted him like he has never been touched in his life ever before. Being an experienced and seasoned soldier, a Centurion no less, he would have experienced and seen much in his life in the service of Rome’s army.
It was in the death of Jesus Christ that this Roman soldier found life.
It was in the time of the world’s darkest moment that this Roman soldier saw the Light.
We cry out sometimes when we are going through difficult times, “Why Lord am I in this time of suffering?”
Could it be that there are Centurions watching on? That they will see Christ’s light shining in you in your darkest moment?
If you want to be used by God, there is no other way than to go through disappointment, difficulty, and pain in order that people might relate to you, watch you and see by the reality of Jesus in your life, that He truly is the Son of God.
People are not convinced of His reality when we are cruising through life. Such times cause only envy and cynicism. But people are changed, transfixed, truly touched when they see you navigating adversity and challenges all the while maintaining your trust in the Lord.
2Co 1:4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
This Roman Centurion was won, saved, and converted not because he was one of the 5,000 eating bread and fish until they were stuffed. But because he saw Jesus in the darkness!
