Daily devotion – wasted life

Pastor Keith   -

Just say the name Samson and we have a vivid array of thoughts of a man who could have been, who should have been, but didn’t.

You have heard the saying, “The devil is in the details,” King Solomon wrote that it is, “the little foxes that spoil the vines.” Song of Solomon 21:5. In other words, if we do not pay attention to the little things that distract us, we will find ourselves in the midst of a big thing that will undo us.

When we settle for status quo, we have settled for defeat when God has called us to victory. We excuse bad habits, trying to convince ourselves and others that bad is not so bad! Habits become unbreakable, so our wills refuse to bend to God’s. When that happens, He has no choice but to break us – judge us.

This was the case you will remember with Samson! Few people have been given greater opportunity than Samson. He was raised by God to be strong, but he literally collapsed because he was rebellious.

Samson made the wrong choices and did the wrong things. He exchanged his potential and power for lustful selfishness and weakness. He abused God’s blessing on his life. He did not take God seriously.

We look at Samson’s life and like him we make life-changing choices for good or bad. When we choose the bad it is because the seed of sin is within us. It can only be rooted out by salvation in Jesus Christ.

“To whom much is given,” the Bible says, “…..much is required.” Luke 12:48 Sadly Samson chased after whatever pleased him and he was headed for a massive fall.

God graciously gave Samson one more chance to bring judgment down upon his enemies, but Samson went down with them, dying a horrible and violent death.

The world offers kicks and thrills to you but beware for through such allurement you will be brought down.

Let us this week be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. You may have to stand alone in class, in your work and in life. But stand alone and live a clean and decent life to the glory of Jesus Christ. Dedicate all your energies to the Lord.

In contrast to Samson this is what a young woman by the name of Ruth did. When faced with a life changing decision Ruth said, 16 But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you,
Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go;
And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people,
And your God, my God.
17 Where you die, I will die,
And there will I be buried.
The LORD do so to me, and more also,
If anything but death parts you and me.”
