Daily devotion – William Tyndale’s sacrifice
On this day, in 1536, William Tyndale was strangled and burned at the stake for translating the Scriptures into English for the common man.
His final words, “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.”
How often we sit with the Bible in our laps or at our kitchen table and not realise the price that was paid just so we can have the Bible in our hands!
The Bible, the Word of God, is being opened less and less in Churches today with more pop culture philosophy being shared. More of man’s wisdom being declared as the way to ‘fix our problems’.
Our problem from the very first book in the Bible is sin. The only cure for sin is the forgiveness of Jesus Christ through His death on the Cross at Calvary and His resurrection three days later. The faith to receive His forgiveness comes through God’s precious Word.
Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Don’t drink water from the cisterns of the world, drink from the living water of God, found in His precious Word. We are not to worship the Bible for that is NOT what the Bible teaches. But we are to treat God’s Word for what it is – 2 TIM 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness….
The next time you open the pages of this blessed letter from our Lord, take a moment to give thanks for those who gave their lives so that in your hands you can read His message of hope and love.
My old Bible College Pastor, Fred Cowan, used to never allow anything to be placed on top of His Bible. He never allowed it to be placed on the ground as well. Such was his understanding of the Bible being more than just another book.
Enjoy this week reading God’s precious Word and remember William Tyndale – may our eyes be open!
