Daily devotion – redeemed at a great price

Pastor Keith   -

The greatest price…was paid

1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

The word redeem is not used as much today. It means to ‘buy back’ – to recover by paying the full price owed. The word redeemed was used widely in the ancient world by the position of a slave who had been captured in battle or enticed into serving one who was not his or her legal master.

Their real master, however, intent on recovering their beloved slave’s service would buy them back – redeem him or her from the enemy – at great personal cost.

This explains exactly what Jesus Christ did for you and I. Held captive by Satan and enticed into his service, we were slaves of sin, without any hope of deliverance of our own. But God loved us so much that He gave His Son Jesus Christ as the price to pay for our deliverance. A price far greater than our true value.

He did it solely because He loved us.

Now we have been redeemed!

Therefore, our lives should be filled with continuous praise and thanksgiving. Remember it was Christ’s precious innocent blood that was the price and for Him to pay this price there was only one way – His death of Calvary!

That beats self-esteem any day!
