Daily devotion – the master we don’t want ruling our lives

Pastor Keith   -

2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

Mat 25:26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.

The Bible condemns laziness but commends work.

Being a faithful and diligent worker is important to God but our work was never meant to become the centre of our lives. Australian men usually when meeting another man they don’t know will routinely ask, “What do you do for a living?” Australian men in particular find their identity in their occupation. The same now is also happening with the modern woman.

One’s occupation has taken on a whole new meaning in today’s society.

But now for many, work has taken that place which belongs only to God. People throw themselves into their work!

When we allow our work to dominate and control us, then it has become an idol to us – and that is wrong. People have placed their worship of God, their fellowship with Church, their marriage, their relationship with their children, after their jobs!

Someone who boasts about working 70 -80 hours or more a week probably thinks he or she is the master of their job – but in reality, they have become its slave.

In addition, because one’s life is so wrapped up in work, his or her sense of self worth – that is, their understanding of their value or significance as a person – often comes to depend on their ability to work.

Unfortunately, our materialistic society only reinforces this view. But God says you are greater than your work, and your work is only a part of His plan for you.

Stop and review your situation today. What comes first? Who comes first?

It is so very easy to be absorbed into your career, your work – and something and someone will be set aside, be discarded if you allow your work to be your master!

Life is very short. Being a husband or wife,  father or mother, is a critical role that needs a great deal of your time.

Place God first in your life and every other piece of the puzzle will fit in its right position.

Not one person I have been with in their last hours upon this earth has ever said to me, “I wish I had worked more!”
