Daily devotion – waste or treasure

Pastor Keith   -

Matthew 6:- 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

More than 2.6 million Australians raced to drain their superannuation accounts under the Morrison government’s $38 billion COVID early release stimulus program, using the money to gamble, buy furniture and takeaway meals. (Sydney Morning Herald)

Notice the spending of superannuation which you store away in an attempt to look after your living in the future. People took money from this future investment to waste it on gambling….buying furniture….and takeaway meals …..Uber etc.

This is a sad indictment on the heart of Australians at this moment. It’s the old ‘eat drink and be merry’ philosophy. These are the very words and lifestyle Jesus tells us of a foolish rich farmer in Luke’s Gospel chapter 12….. 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Are you investing in the kingdom of God? What is your treasure? Where is your treasure? For where your treasure is it reveals where your heart is.

We saw on Wednesday evening in the Book of Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar had a foolish heart full of pride and selfishness. But God in His grace taught the king an enormous lesson that changed his treasure being Babylon and turned his heart toward Heaven.

When we die and we all will eventually face that situation. You will either, by the way you live and invest, store up treasure before you in Heaven. (Remember you can take nothing with you from earth but you can send ahead of you ‘treasure in Heaven’.) Or you can waste it foolishly on selfish whims here on earth.

Examine your investing today. Is it going to be the same investment as a foolish rich (on earth) farmer, or is it going to be someone who has a great deal waiting for them when they open their eyes in the glory of Heaven?

Where is your heart today?
