Daily devotion – the fear of God
1Pe 1:17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 1Pe 2:17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Many people today live in the grip of fear. Phobias and fears have increased with our modern living lifestyles like never before.
Fear and faith we are told are contrary to one another, yet the Bible teaches us to have a reverence – a fear of God. What does this fear look like and how does it work?
1Jo 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
The Bible teaches us to have a godly fear, a reverence for the Lord, that must be in every heart – as Peter tells us in his first letter.
If we fear God, that is hold Him in the respect and awe He deserves, we need not fear anyone or anything else.
Read all of Psalm 112 which starts with the words…. Psa 112:1 Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who delights greatly in His commandments….
Isa 8:13 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread.
The fear of man trips us up – Pro 29:25 The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.
But if we fear God, we need not fear the words or threats of men – Matthew 10: 26 Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
God will always watch over us!
