daily devotion – one breath

Dan 5:23
But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

The night the writing appeared on the wall in Babylon was to be the last night of life for a rebellious king by the name of Belshazzar. He had mocked the God of Israel openly and Daniel said this would be the king’s last evening on earth alive.

Ultimately our lives are all in God’s hands; even our next breath too which we each take as a gift from God. If God were to withdraw His hand from you, your life would end – despite the most strenuous efforts of your doctors.

What am I getting at and what is the point of all this? Firstly, it should remind us of our dependence upon God. All too often we assume that our lives and our futures are in our own hands. But the Bible would tell us differently!

Our lives are in God’s hands.

But this should also remind us that each day we have is a gift from God – a gift to be used wisely, joyfully and for His glory!

No man has power over the wind to contain it; so no one has power over the day of his death – Ecclesiastes 8:8
