Daily devotion – the time of the year

2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me

Finding Strength in Defeat:

It’s that time of year now…..sports carnivals, football, netball finals.

In life, we often find ourselves in situations where we face disappointment, loss, or what seems like failure. Whether it’s losing a sports match, not wining a race, or grappling with personal challenges, these moments can be tough to endure. Our modern society sometimes attempts to shield us from these feelings, especially in childhood, by not keeping score or offering participation trophies. However, as we all know, children are aware of the score, and they understand the difference between winning and losing.

The Bible,, is replete with stories and examples of individuals who faced difficult times and emerged stronger. Take, for instance, the trials faced by a young Joseph or the challenges encountered by the prophet Jeremiah. These stories teach us that God allows storms and trials to sweep over our lives, even when it seems that we are experiencing defeat or failure. This brings us to the central message: God’s strength is often perfected in our weakness.

The Example of the Apostle Paul – The life of the Apostle Paul provides us with a profound illustration of this truth. Paul dedicated himself tirelessly to bring his Jewish brethren to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, yet they sought his death instead. In the face of rejection and opposition, Paul endured immense disappointment and perceived failure.

Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh – Paul also faced a personal struggle, referred to as a “thorn in the flesh.” He earnestly prayed for God to remove it, but God did not grant his request in the way he desired. Instead, God allowed this thorn to remain. Over time, Paul realized that this discomfort was, in fact, a blessing. It served as a constant reminder that God’s grace was all he needed to overcome his challenges. In his weakness, Paul found God’s strength.

Finding Strength in Struggles – Paul’s experience teaches us that God often works in our lives through adversity. The trials and difficulties we face are not meant to defeat us but to build us for more significant challenges. It’s akin to the transformation of a young shepherd boy, Joseph, into the Prime Minister of Egypt. Through his trials, Joseph learned grace and forgiveness, becoming a source of nourishment for a nation during a time of drought.

Conclusion:

In times of disappointment, loss, or apparent failure, it’s essential to step back and seek a broader perspective. Ask God to show you the bigger picture. From the grandstand in Heaven, you may see God working a blessing of grace in your life, preparing you for greater challenges. Just as Paul learned that God’s grace was sufficient for him, you too can find strength in your struggles. Embrace the discomfort, for it may be the very thing that allows God’s power to flow through you in remarkable ways.

So, whether you or your child faces defeat this week, remember that in weakness, God’s strength is perfected. Allow God’s grace to carry you through, knowing that He is building you for a purpose far greater than you can imagine.
