Daily devotion – Stephen the theologian
Act 6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
Stephen is another of my heroes in the Bible who I cannot wait to meet and spend time with when I see Him in Heaven.
Stephen was one of the young Holy Spirit filled men who was asked to serve the widows at the table when problems arose in the early Church. When he was challenged by the religious leaders of Israel on matters of the Bible, they were no match for this young man.
The same thing happens today. I have heard men of higher education say the most foolish things about the Bible. Like Eve did not eat an apple but she ate a pomegranate. The Bible does not tell us what fruit it was, and no one said it was an apple anyhow. But sometimes people can’t resist showing off their ignorance.
The Bible tells us that, 1Co 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Thus, the most brilliant seminary professor, skilled in original language, is not to be relied upon for understanding of the Scriptures if he is not born again because he lacks spiritual discernment.
When a brilliant man is not a spiritual man, his concept of the Scriptures is flawed. Regardless of how much he may know about the Bible, he does not know the Author, and therefore he is unqualified to teach the Book.
Here in is the wonder of God’s Word, that ordinary men and women, boys and girls, born again and filled with the Spirit of God can open God’s Word and know it!
I encourage you to pray each time before you read the Word of God and to look forward with hungry hearts for God to speak to you as you take time to read the words of life.
The Holy Bible is God’s personal letter to you to know Him, to be the avenue through which He will speak to you the wonders of life.
This is why Paul in 2 Timothy calls the message of God a treasure to behold, to know and to be trusted.
Let no one with empty words or supposed new things deceive you away from God’s Word given to you to know and understand.
Follow Stephens pattern, and live for the Lord with all your heart today.
Psa 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
