Daily devotion – Wonderful
Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful
As we look at Isaiah’s description of Jesus the King, born in a stable in Bethlehem we see each aspect of the work that God wants to do in our lives.
and his name shall be called Wonderful – This word ‘wonderful’ comes from the root word ‘wonder’, which means “a sense of awe.”
A fellow by the name of Bertrand Russell claimed that at least half of the sins of humanity were caused by the fear of boredom. Today, we have a society full of bored people. Which when you think about it seems to be a contradiction of our so called ‘busyness’. We have had incredible technological advances recently, T.V.’s, C.D.’s, DVD’s, thumb drives, smartphones, iPads, and a host of video games.
With all this ‘stuff’ at our fingertips, yet how many young folks say so often, “I am bored.” Gadgets eventually lose their appeal.
This is symbolic of the things that we chase after in life. There is an excitement at first – the carrot at the end of the stick, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – but ultimately, there is emptiness in them.
Jesus, born in Bethlehem, came to not only save us from our sins, but to bring wonder into our lives. Why would we be in awe of God?
When we discover that God loves, when we come to know more about Him each day through His Word and prayer, we discover God loves us in spite of all our failings and all of our sins and all of our flaws.
It is amazing. It is bewildering and it is awe-inspiring! We can now say along with the Psalmist – Psalm 8: When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?
In other words, as I look upon the glory of the universe and think of God’s awesomeness, His greatness, His power, why would He care about someone like me?
But He does, the Bible tells me He does. Knowing that God is wonderful takes care of the dullness of life!
