Daily devotion – Husbands, pay attention to your wife when she has the mind of the Lord!
Genesis 21: 1 And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac.
Sarah falls pregnant just as God had promised. We should never be ‘surprised’ when God keeps His word! God’s promise came right on time – God is never late, even though we often impatiently think He is.
Ecc 3:1 To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
Ecc 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.
The promised son is given the name Isaac, he is circumcised on the eighth day, and Abraham is 100 years old at this time.
As Isaac grows, he is weaned from his mother Sarah, and Abraham calls a special feast for that day, but Sarah notices Ishmael, son of Hagar is scoffing the celebratory day.
10 Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.” 11 And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham’s sight because of his son.
12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called. 13 Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed.”
Sarah makes a big call because of Ishmael’s actions and speaks to Abraham saying Hagar and Ishmael are to go. Abraham is displeased with Sarah’s request.
Abraham and Sarah are at loggerheads, the household of faith is in rough seas so God intervenes and for all us husbands note, He tells Abraham to heed Sarah’s words – in other words, she is right in what she is requesting!
The husband may be the spiritual head of the family, but as we see here, our wives are to be listened to when they have the mind of the Lord!
God reminds Abraham once again that it is Isaac who alone is the child of promise. He tells Abraham He will take care of Hagar and Ishmael as we read on later in the chapter.
God never leaves out what needs to happen. This chapter tells us that the more we give our lives, our marriages, and our children to the Lord, the so much better the blessings will be to all.
How important it was for all these events to happen as God had planned – so too how important in our own lives it is for us to always seek to follow God’s path no matter how we feel or think!
