Living in Light of the Lord’s Return: Be Patient
In these uncertain times, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the injustices and trials we face daily. The sermon on Sunday night, based on James 5:7-12, reminds us that we are living in the Last Days, a period characterised by the imminent return of Christ. This anticipation shapes how we should live and react, especially when dealing with adversity and the wickedness around us.
James exhorts us to be patient, emphasising that patience is a critical virtue in the life of a believer. While it may seem like inaction, patience is an active decision to trust God, endure hardships, and wait for His perfect timing. This kind of patience is not passive resignation but a strong, deliberate choice to submit to God’s will and timing, even when results are not immediate.
To illustrate this, James uses the example of a farmer who works diligently, preparing the soil and tending to the crops, but ultimately must wait for the rains and growth that only God can provide. Similarly, we must cultivate our faith, engage in prayer, study the Scriptures, and fellowship with other believers, all while trusting God for the growth and resolution of our struggles.
The call to patience is also a call to strengthen our hearts. True patience requires strength and endurance, particularly when facing persecution or injustice. James encourages us to follow the examples of the prophets and Job, who, despite their complaints and struggles, remained faithful and patient.
In conclusion, as we wait for the Lord’s return, let us be patient, strengthen our hearts, and trust in God’s timing and justice. Remember, the Lord’s coming is near, and He will set all things right. Be patient and steadfast, knowing that God is compassionate and merciful.
