Daily devotion – manna from Heaven
Lam 3:23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
When the children of Israel left Egypt after 400 years of slavery, they began a journey that would take some 40 years through the wilderness. During this time the children of Israel began to complain to Moses and Aaron – Exo 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.
Following the people’s complaints, God spoke to Moses and told him that the following day He would bring bread from Heaven to feed them.
Exo 16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
However, there were certain conditions given by God on the collecting of this bread from Heaven. Exo 16:5 And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.
If the people during the week tried to hoard this ‘bread’ – manna- it would turn sour on them and rot. Therefore, each new day they were to collect this bread to sustain them on their journey.
In John chapter 6, the crowd wanted Jesus to prove He was the Messiah by duplicating the miracle of the manna, but instead Jesus declared that He was “the true bread” that came down from Heaven. The Old Testament manna was a type or picture of God’s Son who came to give Himself as the Bread of Life for hungry sinners.
Too many people today have followed the example of the children of Israel in the wilderness. They are living on past blessings of the Lord only and missing out on God’s promise to give us fresh new bread from God’s Word each day.
I encourage you each day, even whilst you’re having your breakfast, for you to open God’s Word and eat of the fresh manna/bread from Heaven. God will set your day and fill your spirit with sustenance to strengthen you and enable you to enjoy the wonder of God’s blessed bread from Heaven.
