Daily devotions – one of those days
Psalm 42:1 “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”
Sometimes life can feel like a challenge, even without any significant events or trauma occurring. There are days when things just seem like a strain, and your emotions are worn thin, yet there may not be any visible storm or trial—it’s simply life.
We are complex creations of God, made with emotions, feelings, and sensitivities that can sometimes be affected by the smallest of things. We might sense disconnection, misunderstanding, or disharmony, and at times, it’s us being oversensitive. At other times, it feels as though we’re navigating little potholes without anyone else knowing the struggles we’re facing.
In these moments, it’s comforting to know that we can seek refuge under God’s wings, much like a mother hen protects her young. Within us is a built-in desire for protection from our Shepherd, and it’s during times like these when we need to be reassured that He is watching over us.
Like the psalmist describes, we are often like a thirsty deer longing for the refreshment of cool, fresh water. In those moments of longing, God’s Word becomes the source of protection, refreshment, and peace through His Holy Spirit. It’s where we can rest in His presence and find solace.
God’s Word meets our deepest needs, and it never fails to refresh and renew us whenever we open its pages. It provides comfort in times of uncertainty and nourishment for our souls when we are spiritually dry.
If you’re struggling at this moment, come to the waterhole of life alongside the thirsty deer, and you will find the Good Shepherd watching over you. Like the protective wings of a mother hen, God’s grace will cover you, providing the shelter and rest you need.
Luke 13:34 reminds us of this compassionate care: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!”
Let us be willing to run to His arms, allowing Him to gather us under His wings and restore our souls with His ever-flowing grace.
