Daily devotion – nearly Christmas

Preparing for His Coming

Christmas is just around the corner, and what a privilege it has been to preach and reflect on the wonder of Christ’s birth throughout Advent. This Sunday, as we gather once again, we’ll turn our hearts to Mary’s song of praise—her Magnificat—sung during her visit with Elizabeth. Mary, carrying the Savior of the world, and Elizabeth, six months into her pregnancy with John the Baptist, embody the profound joy and expectation of God’s promises fulfilled.

Our Sunday will also be marked by joyous milestones: a blessed baby dedication and a beach baptism—beautiful pictures of new life and public declarations of faith.

As we move closer to celebrating Christ’s first coming, we are reminded daily of His second coming, which draws nearer with every passing moment. The unfolding events in the world, particularly surrounding Israel, the epicenter of biblical prophecy, signal the urgency of the times we live in. The rise in antisemitism and global attention on God’s chosen people are clear reminders of Scripture’s prophetic accuracy.

In light of these truths, I am preparing not only a message to celebrate the birth of our Savior but also a Bible Prophecy update for the first Sunday of 2025. For those of us in Australia, it is crucial to understand the times and the implications of the growing antagonism toward Israel. This is a message we must take to heart as we enter a new year.

The Apostle Peter’s sobering reminder in 2 Peter 3:10-14 calls us to live holy and godly lives, with an eager anticipation of the day of the Lord. We must examine our hearts, ensuring we are living lives that are pure, blameless, and anchored in Christ.

Too many people remain deceived, thinking a casual relationship with the church or God will suffice. But salvation is found not in proximity to faith, but in surrender to Christ. Knowing about God is not the same as knowing Him personally as Savior and Lord.

Hebrews 3:12 warns us: “Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.”

This season, let us reflect deeply on our faith. Are we fully surrendered to Christ? Are we living with the urgency and purpose that reflect the reality of His imminent return? Let us encourage one another to walk in holiness and point others to the hope found in Christ.

As we gather this Sunday and look ahead to Christmas and beyond, may we do so with hearts ready, lives surrendered, and a steadfast hope in His promises.
