Our History! – Four hundred years ago, Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, was commissioned by the Pope “to serve God and spread the holy Catholic faith.” He set off seeking to take Christ to the inhabitants of the South Sea Islands when he landed in Vanuatu, naming the island ‘Australia del Espiritu Santo.’ There, on the day of Pentecost, 1606 he spoke of the destiny of Australia and prophetically claimed the region to the south, including Australasia, as the Great South Lands of the Holy Spirit: “Let the heavens, the earth…and all those present witness that I, Captain Perdo Fernandez de Quiros…in the name of Jesus Christ… hoist this emblem of the Holy Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified and whereon He gave His life for the ransom and remedy of all the human race… on this day of Pentecost, 1606… I take possession of all this part of the South as far as the pole, in the name of Jesus… which from now on shall be called the Southern Land of the Holy Ghost …and this always and forever… and to the end that to all natives, in all the said lands, the holy and sacred evangel may be preached zealously and openly.

Pastors Pen – The first fleet arrived January 1788 with the first Christian Minister in Australia. He was the Rev. Richard Johnson. He was chaplain to the convicts – 568 males, 191 females with 13 children who had survived the 8-month voyage from England. He was also responsible for 4 companies of marines (100-250 per company) with Rev’d. Johnson’s flock being some where around 1,000 people! The first public service in Australia occurred under a large tree starting at 10:00am on Sunday February 3rd, 1788 with the order from the Governor Arthur Philip stating, “No man to be absent on any account whatever!” Pastor John preached from Psalm 116:12 – ‘What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.’ It was recorded that the behaviour of the convicts at the time was ‘regular and attentive’. Our history as a young nation is quite remarkable with us basically being one large prison island. White slavery is our heritage as a nation with the convict shipments. But we all this day know that every man woman and child is born a slave to sin and that the only true freedom we can have is through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Today, as we celebrate Australia Day, may we give thanks for all that the Lord has done in blessing us to be able to live in such a rich nation. Let us pray for our home, for our people, who even though we are now no longer convicts from England, far too many are living in chains to the power of the enemy. May God bless our land and bring revival to this our Australia in 2025!

Helen’s Heart Rev 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. God’s ear is attentive to the cry of His child, this is true, but, we must not use the vehicle of prayer as we do the phone – a few words of brief conversation and text. Brief repetitions and requests for personal favours are not the means to a close intimate relationship with our Father God. This is the great privilege and glory we have to converse with God the Holy One. Draw near to God this week!
