Good Friday Devotion
John 10:11 – “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

It’s Good Friday, and there’s a gentle coolness in the air as a true autumn morning settles over us here in Secret Harbour, Western Australia. Its as though the weather is aware its Easter as well! As a passionate follower of Jesus Christ, I often find myself overwhelmed as I read God’s Word, and the Holy Spirit opens my heart to the wonder of God’s love and grace.

There are moments, while I sit at my desk preparing messages for our church here at Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour, when I must pause—stop everything—and give thanks again for the mercy of God upon my soul.

Easter is all of this… but magnified.
As we gather to remember Christ’s cruel treatment and His willing surrender to sinful man—allowing Himself to be taken and crucified—I find myself troubled. For though I am deeply aware of God’s presence, especially at Easter, so many who bear the name of Christ appear unmoved.

I understand that personalities differ, and not everyone expresses faith in the same way. But when someone goes through the motions of following Jesus with no visible emotion, no heart-stirring response, I can’t help but wonder—is something missing?

In Scripture, time and again, when people encountered the living God, they fell to their knees, they wept, they worshiped, and their words were filled with awe and thanksgiving.

Can you imagine a wedding with no joy between the bride and groom? Or a birth without tears of wonder?

Has selfishness hardened our hearts to the point where we are no longer moved by the love of God?

Are we too busy to pause like Mary and sit at Jesus’ feet?

Have we taken God’s blessings for granted—unlike David, who once was so overwhelmed that he stood speechless before God?

Our children are watching—not just our words, but our example.
Have they ever seen you—father, mother—repent before God?
Have they seen you lift your hands in surrender and worship during a church service?
Have they seen you so overcome by God’s love that tears fill your eyes?

Easter.
Is it just four days of public holidays?
Or is it a week of deepened passion for the Saviour who died a cruel death on Calvary’s cross—paying for all your sins—and then rose victorious on the third day?

Easter is magnificent… because our God is magnificent!

John 3:16 –
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.”
