Daily devotion: Faithful!

The Power of Simply Showing Up
Acts 3:1–10

“Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour…”
(Acts 3:1)

Jesus had ascended into Heaven. Peter had preached his first sermon under the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit, and the Church was born on Pentecost. Now what?

We find in Acts chapter 3 that Peter and John are simply continuing their walk with God—going about their daily routine of prayer and devotion. There’s no fanfare, no spotlight—just quiet faithfulness.

They’re heading to the temple, as was their custom, at the hour of prayer. And there, in the ordinary, God performs something extraordinary.

A man lame from birth is carried each day to the temple gate called Beautiful. He’s hoping for coins, but God had something far better planned for him. Peter says, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (v.6)

And in a moment, healing comes. Strength enters those lifeless legs. The man leaps, walks, and praises God—and the people watching are filled with wonder.

But don’t miss the simple point: Peter and John were there. They were going about God’s business, not basking in spiritual success or resting on past victories. They were available.

Today, many believers long to be used by God. They ask for prayer, inquire about special study programs, or seek spiritual growth—and all of this is good! But too often, the same people make it to church only occasionally, seldom attend the prayer meeting, or are rarely available to serve in any capacity.

Here’s a simple truth: God uses those who are faithful, and above all, available.

If Peter and John had skipped their regular time of prayer that day, the lame man at the gate would not have had his encounter with Christ and been healed.

Let us not underestimate the power of showing up—of being where God wants us, doing what we know to do, even when it feels ordinary.

Be a plodder—someone who is consistently, humbly going about God’s business in the everyday. Be present. Be faithful. God will do the rest.
