“Spiritual Gifts — Used in Love, Guided by Order”

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

In the previous post, we looked at how God gives spiritual gifts to build His church and glorify His name. But how should these gifts be used? The answer lies in 1 Corinthians 13–14.

Between two rich chapters on spiritual gifts sits Paul’s famous “love chapter.” It’s no coincidence. Love is the proof that a spiritual gift is truly Spirit-led. Without it, even the most spectacular gift is just noise. As Paul puts it, “If I speak in tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a clanging cymbal.”

Paul also gives practical instructions on how the gifts should be used, especially in public worship. For example, the gift of tongues should be used with interpretation so the church can understand and be edified. Prophecy—speaking God’s truth in a timely, encouraging way—is especially valuable in the church setting because it strengthens the hearers directly.

At CCSH, we affirm the continuation of the gifts but encourage their use in line with biblical guidelines. That means prioritising clarity, unity, and love in how they are exercised. As Paul concludes, “God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (1 Cor 14:33).

So here’s our mission: “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts” (1 Cor 14:1). Walk in love. Seek the Spirit’s empowering. And use your gifts to honour Jesus and bless His people.
