The “Forgotten” Member of the Trinity
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever—even the Spirit of truth…” – John 14:16–17
Have you ever thought of the Holy Spirit as the forgotten Person of the Trinity?
Jesus knew that His disciples would feel lost and orphaned without Him. So He promised “another Helper” – one just like Himself – who would be with them always. That Helper is the Holy Spirit, or in the original Greek, the Parakletos: the one who comes alongside to comfort, guide, empower, and dwell within us.
Many believers understand God as Father, and they follow Jesus as Lord, but they struggle to relate to the Holy Spirit. Some reduce Him to a force or vague spiritual influence. But Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person—He speaks, leads, teaches, grieves. He is God – omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. He’s not optional for the Christian life – He is essential.
More than that, the Spirit of God lives in you. Jesus said it was better that He return to the Father so the Spirit could come. Why? Because through the Spirit, Jesus’ presence is both universal and internal – He now dwells in every believer, everywhere.
The Holy Spirit reveals God’s truth, convicts us of sin, regenerates us, empowers us for ministry, and transforms us to be like Christ. His work is deep, personal, and daily.
So let me ask you: Not just “Do you have the Spirit?” but “Does the Spirit have you?” Is your heart open to His influence today?
Let’s not ignore or resist Him. Let Him glorify Jesus through you.
