Daily devotion – The wonder that is Genesis!
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
The first book of the Bible, Genesis, is one of the most wonderful and vital books to learn, study, and know. Without a sound understanding of Genesis, a person’s view of the remaining 65 books of Scripture can easily become skewed.
It’s like a navigator on a ship or plane: if he begins his journey with the wrong bearings, just one degree off in latitude or longitude, the longer he travels, the further he drifts off course. Or, imagine trying to build a house without a firm and solid foundation—the structure may stand for a while, but eventually, it will crumble.
Genesis is not called “the book of beginnings” without a very valid reason!
The first eleven chapters of Genesis give us the essential truths and the key to unlocking the rest of Scripture. They lay the foundation that enables us to live to the glory of God.
In them, we are introduced to twelve foundational teachings upon which the whole of Scripture rests:
God is real, and we can trust Him.
We live in God’s creation.
We are made in the image of God.
Obedience to God brings usefulness, joy, and blessing.
Satan is real—but he is a defeated enemy.
Sin is real and must be dealt with.
Sex is God’s idea, and He knows best how it is to be used.
All humans are made of one blood.
Israel is—and always will be—God’s chosen people.
God does not change and is always in control, no matter how things may appear.
Our relationship with God is based on faith.
Living for God is the most rewarding life possible.
If you have never read the book of Genesis, I pray that you will make it a point to begin today—read it, study it, and enjoy it. When you do, it will act like that small bubble in a carpenter’s level, ensuring that your understanding of the rest of Scripture remains steady and true.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
