Daily devotion – The foolish sailor!
Every Monday we begin a new week, we may have the same school, university, workplace to go to or home duties to perform, but God is always part of our new days.
It is to play the fool to ignore God and to simply go about our business. I don’t use the word fool unwisely, as I relate foolishness and living in such a way as the Bible defines the term.
Jesus used the term a number of times in His teaching but one is of great significance. In Luke’s Gospel chapter 12: – 16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Jesus said this certain rich man was a fool because he lived his life completely shutting out any concept of God and He being our Creator and Lord and our interacting with Him. This rich man was completely wrapped up in his own world blind to the existence of God and having no connection to Him.
In the book of psalms there is even a more definitive encapsulation of living as a fool. King David wrote, “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” – Psalm 14:1.
This week as you step our of your bed to begin a new day, a new week, take some time to include God in your day and coming week. Give the Lord your day and ask Him to lead you and guide you through it. Pray for God to help you grow through the week and to see people and events through His eyes. You will never have a mundane or ‘same same’ week ever again!
Lets us not live a foolish existence but let us heed the Apostles words – Eph 5:15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,
Our life each day has the attention of the Lord God Almighty watching over it, planning it and leading it. It is only a fool who drifts with the wind and tide. It is a wise man or woman that marks out their course, sets their sail, and guides the rudder until he or she reaches their destination.
It is said that when a sailor does not know what port he is heading to, no wind is the right wind!
