Daily devotion – Manna fresh every day
Exodus 16:14–21
When the children of Israel first saw the manna upon the ground, they asked, “What is it?” Moses told them, “This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.” Each person was commanded to gather just what was needed for the day. If they tried to hoard it, it spoiled. If they delayed, the sun melted it away.
There was no room for laziness in God’s camp. Each morning required faith and diligence. Every man, woman, and child had to rise early and gather their portion.
The same is true for us today. We, too, need to rise early and gather spiritual food. We cannot live on yesterday’s portion — we need fresh manna from God’s Word today. If we neglect it, our day can quickly become cluttered, confused, and spiritually malnourished.
Notice also the principle of sufficiency. “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack” (v.18). God always provides exactly what we need. The secret is not in storing up, but in trusting Him daily.
Even Abraham, our father of faith, is repeatedly described as an early riser (Gen. 19:27; 21:14; 22:3). He sought God at the break of day. Should we do any less?
When the Sabbath came, Israel was instructed to gather double. God’s provision was perfect even for their rest. The manna only kept when they obeyed God’s command. Disobedience led to rot. Likewise, if we neglect God’s Word or treat it casually, we find ourselves spiritually empty.
Too many believers today speak only of the past—what God once did in their lives—yet have no fresh testimony of His power today. But daily manna keeps our walk vibrant and alive. It’s not enough to live off yesterday’s blessings or last Sunday’s sermon.
David captured this beautifully when he said:
“How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Ps. 119:103).
Every time we open God’s Word with a humble heart, it becomes like a hot, fresh meal from Heaven. It strengthens our inner man, renews our spirit, and cuts away the old fleshly nature. And just like a great meal that we can’t help but tell others about, when God’s Word nourishes us, we will naturally share it with others.
So, rise early. Gather your portion. Taste and see that the Lord is good. There is fresh manna for you today.
