Daily devotion – Its time to sing now!
Psalm 40:3
“He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the LORD.”
Ephesians 5:19
“…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
Judaism and Christianity are singing religions. Atheism is songless—it has nothing to sing about. At the funeral of Robert Ingersoll, the noted agnostic, the notice simply stated: “There will be no singing.”
From the beginning, God’s people have been marked by song. The psalm-singing Christian martyrs, as they went to their deaths, alerted the Roman Empire that a new and revolutionary force had entered the world. As the pleasure-bent Roman populace watched believers sing fearlessly while entering the amphitheatre—where hungry lions awaited them—they were filled with awe. Their faith could not be silenced, even by death.
Heaven itself is vibrant with song:
“And they sing the song of Moses… and the song of the Lamb” (Revelation 15:3).
One day, when we gather together in glory, we will all sing unto the Lord in a choir of millions:
Revelation 5:9
“And they sang a new song, saying:
‘You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.’”
Let us not wait until Heaven to sing.
Let the song God has placed in our hearts be heard today—by the church, by the world, and for the glory of our Redeemer.
