Daily devotion – Always in His debt and always thankful for Him!
Matthew 21:9
“Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
‘Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’
Hosanna in the highest!’”
The word “Hosanna” means “Save now.”
In reality, the crowd was crying out:
Overthrow Roman rule — do it now!
Deliver us from poverty — do it now!
Be our military general and give us victory — save us now!
It is no wonder that as the week progressed and the people realized Jesus was not going to fulfill their political, economic, or nationalistic expectations, the same voices that cried “Save now!” soon cried “Crucify Him!”
We still see this same reaction today.
Some confess Christ, yet soon find their world at war. Illness strikes a loved one. Prayers seem unanswered, bouncing off what feels like a brass ceiling. Disappointment sets in, and the heart declares, “I’m done with Jesus.”
Many expect Jesus to be a genie in a lamp — guaranteeing financial prosperity, physical health, and social ease. When life does not improve on their terms, disillusionment follows.
But we must remember why Jesus came.
He came to die for our sins — to pay a debt we could never repay. That alone is more than enough to deserve our loyalty, our affection, and our devotion.
If Jesus never does another thing for me —
if He never grants another blessing —
I will still owe Him my life for what He accomplished for me at Calvary.
Luke 10:17–20
“Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’
And He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.’”
Jesus redirects their joy. Power is exciting. Victory is exhilarating. But those things are temporary.
Our greatest cause for rejoicing is not what Christ does through us — but what He has done for us.
Our names are written in heaven.
That is the truest reason to cry “Hosanna.”
