Daily devotion – Life has many twists and turns.
The reality of life is sometimes lost in seasons of bliss. Sunny days, clear skies, and calm waters can cause us to forget how fragile life truly is.
Life can change as quickly as the ocean. One moment it is calm and inviting; the next, an oncoming set of waves turns it into a dangerous force with no restraint.
The disciples of Jesus experienced this firsthand on the Sea of Galilee. It was not unfamiliar waters to them—many were seasoned fishermen who worked those seas daily—yet a storm suddenly arose.
John 6:16–21
“Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing… But He said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.”
How true this is of our own lives. Everything can change in a moment—with a phone call, a mishap, a cough, or a simple fall.
The story of Job reminds us how quickly life can unravel. In a single day, everything he knew and relied upon crumbled before him.
Are we then to live in fear? In constant apprehension? No. As believers, we are called to live by faith, not fear. Yet living by faith does not mean living foolishly.
Each day we wake, we are to commit our day to the Lord. Christianity is not a distant belief system—it is a living relationship. A daily, continual communion with Christ. Speaking with Him often. Casting our cares upon Him continually. Seeking His help at every turn.
It is the foolish believer—walking unwisely, ill-prepared, starving for the Word of God, disconnected from fellowship with the body of Christ—who is most vulnerable when the storms come. Such a believer is easily swept out to sea when real trials hit.
King Solomon reminds us of life’s certainty of change:
“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven…
A time to be born,
And a time to die…”
(Ecclesiastes 3:1–8)
Let us live with our eyes fixed on the Lord. He will care for us through the storms He allows to wash over our lives. He will bring us through the difficult and trying seasons.
And when once again our feet touch safe, dry land, may we gather with the body of Christ—sharing our victories, declaring His faithfulness, and rejoicing in the wonder and glory of God’s great love for each of us.
