Daily devotion – Set your house in order.
“Set Your House in Order”
2 Kings 20:1
In Second Book of Kings 20:1, we read of Hezekiah, a godly king struck down with sickness. The prophet Isaiah came to him with a sobering message from the Lord:
“Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.”
What a sentence to hear.
We prepare fastidiously for so many mundane things. We prepare school lunches for the children, picnics with careful checklists, holidays with bookings, tickets, packing, and arrangements for the pets. Weddings require months of planning — venues, attendants, music, dresses — though often far less preparation goes into the marriage itself.
Yet the most certain appointment of all is frequently neglected: eternity.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us in Epistle to the Hebrews 9:27:
“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
This is a divine appointment — one we will not miss, reschedule, or avoid.
So many face death ill-prepared because they have postponed the greatest decision of all: Where will I spend eternity? What happens when I leave this body?
The Lord graciously warned Hezekiah in advance. Not everyone receives such notice. For most, death comes unexpectedly. And even for believers, the timing remains unknown.
What if the Lord were to say to you today,
“Set your house in order. I am taking you home.”
Would you panic? Or would there be peace?
To set your house in order is more than organizing documents or writing a will. It is to ensure your heart is right with God. It is to walk daily with Christ. It is to confess known sin, reconcile broken relationships, forgive freely, and live in obedience.
If we knew the exact hour of our departure, would it not change the way we live today?
Many say, “Death is far off — I need not think about it now.” Yet Scripture consistently calls us to readiness. Not morbid fear, but joyful preparedness.
When your house is in order spiritually, something beautiful happens:
There is peace.
There is assurance.
There is expectancy.
An inner joy settles in the heart — a quiet confidence that this world cannot understand — because your eternity is secure.
So the next time you are preparing for a fishing trip, a golf day, a family gathering, or a holiday, ask yourself:
Have I already set my house in order?
When that is settled, you are truly free to live — and ready, whenever the Lord calls.
