Mercy That Costs — and Transforms

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Joseph woke up from his dream and did exactly what the angel commanded: he took Mary as his wife. No hesitation. No bargaining. Just obedience.

But don’t miss the cost. By saying yes, Joseph stepped publicly into the story. The timeline wouldn’t add up. Rumours would swirl. He would absorb misunderstanding and shame that wasn’t his own. In a quiet, human way, Joseph became a living picture of the greater mercy to come.

Because what Joseph did in one small town, Jesus would do for the entire world. He didn’t just absorb rumours — He absorbed our sin. He didn’t just share shame — He carried it to a cross. “He will save His people from their sins” wasn’t a safe promise; it was a costly mission that began in a cradle and ended on Calvary.

Matthew wants us to see this from the very first chapter: the King who enters our mess is not distant, shocked, or powerless. He chose humiliation so we could receive mercy we could never earn.

And now the question turns to us. Once we’ve seen a Saviour who steps into scandal, takes on shame, and obeys at great cost, how can we keep standing at a safe distance from other people’s messes? The same mercy that reached us now flows through us — toward the broken relationship, the struggling friend, the family member who’s made a mess of things. We can bring the Gospel message of Jesus, the Christ, to them.

Today, look around. Who needs the kind of quiet mercy Joseph showed? Who needs the bold mercy Jesus secured? Step in. Obey. Reflect the King  – Jesus!

Lord Jesus, thank You for the mercy that cost You everything. Make me quick to extend grace to others, even when it’s inconvenient or costly. Help me live as one who has been rescued. Amen.
