The Voice in the Wilderness
When a king is coming, everything changes. Roads are cleared, obstacles removed, and preparations made so nothing hinders his arrival. In Matthew 3, God sends a herald ahead of King Jesus — not to the temple or city squares, but into the barren wilderness. His name is John the Baptist.
John was anything but conventional. Dressed in camel’s hair with a leather belt, eating locusts and wild honey, he stood by the Jordan River shouting, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” No polished marketing, no comfortable venue — just a wild-looking prophet fulfilling Isaiah’s words: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.’”
People came anyway. From Jerusalem, all Judea, and the region around the Jordan, crowds trekked into the desert. They confessed their sins and were baptised, sensing that after 400 years of silence, God was doing something real.
John’s life reminds us that God delights in using the unconventional. You don’t need a perfect platform, impressive credentials, or a trendy image to point people to Jesus. Sometimes the most powerful voices are the ones that don’t fit the expected mold.
What “wilderness” has God placed you in right now? Maybe it feels dry, unnoticed, or far from the spotlight. That could be exactly where He wants to use you. Clear the obstacles in your own heart first — repent, confess, turn fully toward Him — then become a voice that prepares the way for others.
The King is coming again. Be ready, and help others get ready too.
Lord Jesus, thank You for using unlikely people like John, and like me. Help me clear every obstacle in my heart and boldly point others to You. Like John, make me a faithful voice in the wilderness. Amen.
