The Wilderness Where the King Was Tested
Right after the glorious moment of His baptism — when the heavens opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father declared, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” — Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the Judean wilderness.
This was no accident. The same Spirit who anointed Him now drove Him into forty days of fasting in a barren, rocky wasteland. Hungry, physically depleted, and completely alone, the Son of God faced the fiercest testing.
Why would God allow this? Two powerful reasons emerge. First, to prove who Jesus truly is. Where the first Adam failed in a perfect garden with every need supplied, the last Adam (Jesus) stood firm in a desolate desert, starving and under direct attack from Satan. Jesus proved He is the trustworthy Messiah — the One we can follow with absolute confidence.
Second, to relate to us. Because He was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin, He understands our struggles intimately. He is a merciful High Priest who doesn’t stand aloof from our pain but steps into it with us (Heb 2:18 & Heb 4:15-16).
If you’re in a wilderness season right now — after a spiritual high, or in the middle of dryness and difficulty — take heart. God may be preparing you there. The wilderness is often the place of greatest testing, but also the place where our faith is refined and our dependence on God deepens.
Jesus emerged victorious so that we could find strength in Him during our own battles.
Lord Jesus, thank You for entering the wilderness for me. When I face testing and temptation, remind me that You understand and have already won the victory. Help me trust You in the dry places. Amen.
