Daily devotion – A quiet life!
1 Thessalonians 4:11
“And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.”
Paul uses two expressions that almost seem to pull in opposite directions. The NIV captures it well: “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.”
To make it your ambition speaks of zeal, eagerness, even a sense of honour in pursuing something. Yet the goal is surprisingly simple—a quiet life. This quietness is not laziness or passivity, but a spirit that is calm, settled, and not given to unnecessary noise, conflict, or interference.
Is such a life really possible in our world?
Everything around us pushes in the opposite direction. Noise, entertainment, constant activity, and the pursuit of excitement dominate the culture. The question often asked is, “Is it fun?” rather than, “Is it true? Is it right? Is it godly?”
But the believer is called to something deeper.
Paul instructs us to mind our own business—not in a harsh or indifferent way, but in a focused, disciplined life that avoids meddling in the affairs of others. There is a quiet dignity in faithfully attending to what God has placed in our hands. Whether in work, ministry, or daily responsibilities, diligence honours the Lord.
This stands in contrast to a spirit that expects ease or treats God’s blessings as an excuse for idleness. Such attitudes can quickly become a snare. God has designed both society and the Church to function through faithful, steady, and willing hands.
As we live in anticipation of the Lord’s return, we are called to lives marked by peace—free from unnecessary conflict, free from striving, and free from restless distraction.
And in doing so, our lives become a testimony: a visible witness to the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
A quiet life, lived faithfully before God, speaks louder than a noisy one ever could.
