The Danger of Tasteless Salt
Jesus gives a sobering warning in Matthew 5:13: “But if salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
In ancient times, salt could become contaminated and lose its preserving and flavouring power. When that happened, it became useless — fit only to be discarded on pathways and trampled.
This is a serious caution for every believer. We don’t lose our salvation when we drift, but we can lose our usefulness. When we compromise with the world, conform to its patterns, or hide our faith, we lose our distinctiveness. We become tasteless salt — good for nothing in the kingdom’s work.
Paul had a similar fear: “I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27).
The world desperately needs salty Christians. But salt only works when it remains different from its surroundings. The moment we blend in completely, we lose our power to preserve, flavour, purify, or create thirst.
Examine your life honestly today. Have you grown too comfortable with sin? Too similar to the culture around you? Too quiet about your faith?
Ask the Lord to restore your saltiness. Stay close to Christ, stay in His Word, and stay dependent on His Spirit so your life remains distinctly useful for His kingdom.
Lord, don’t let me lose my saltiness. Keep me distinct, useful, and fully surrendered to You. Restore me where I’ve grown bland. Amen.
